Making a Statement.
Chief among African leaders, Nelson Mandela is one of few statesmen to have achieved almost universal respect around the world and across the political spectrum.
Imprisoned on Robben Island for 27 years, Mandela symbolized oppression around the world. After regaining freedom, he left imprisonment with nothing but high spirits. A grudge is something Mandela did not have; however, something he wanted to strive for was instilling confidence to all. Nelson Mandela took the responsibility to regain equal rights between all South Africans.
"A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination."

In 1994, Mandela was elected as South Africa's first democratic president, he tackled the task of uniting the entire country's racial groupings. A significant milestone of his presidency was the constitution he enacted.
The Constitution he passed begins with the statement: "We, the people of South Africa, Recognize the injustices of our past."
From experiencing the oppression firsthand, Mandela did everything in his power in ensuring a more perfect union.
